We hit our first bump in the road: Friday, our school district had an in-service day. The girls' friends didn't have school. Therefore, the girls were quite offended that we DID have school. They were unimpressed by my argument that we will have days off when their friends will be in school. (I reminded them that their birthdays are marked as school holidays on our calendar!) We finally got through school work but it took them MUCH longer than it needed to. A valuable lesson was reinforced: Dragging your feet will just produce drag marks; Mom and Dad are NOT going to cave.
On Sunday afternoon, one of their cousins was over. The girls "taught" her the Continents & Oceans song. Ellie, my six year old, got on the computer and played the continents game - and got all of them correct the first time without hesitation. She was proud of herself and I was proud of both of us!
The first week, we had Bible, Math, Phonics, Penmanship, and PE. Last week, we added Science. This week, we added History. Next week, we'll add Music. When they are focused and stay on task, everything is done around 1 or 2. When they are unfocused and drawn to all-things-shiny, it's more like 3 or 4. I'm hoping as they get into more of a routine, that 2 or 3 becomes the steady average. It is nice, though, to be able to be work with their level of focus each day and gear details to help them soak in as much as possible.
